"How have you come by these extremely beautiful Chant CDs?"
The proprietor of this site, Matthew McDevitt, was in the Seminary where these CDs were
recorded (for 3 years and 4 months). During that time, he was set in charge of the Audio
Department. Because he loved Gregorian Chant, he set at once to immortalizing the beautiful
Chant which was sung every day in the Main Chapel. 50 trained male voices singing the Church's
traditional Gregorian Chant is a sound not easily forgotten. As a labor of love, Matthew went
out of his way to record everything sung, hoping to share it with his family and others who
are not able to hear Chant every day. Thank God these recordings were made at the time!
Two Chant compendia were put together while still at the Seminary - and others
helped put together Matins and Tenebrae 2000. At first, there were a few glitches,
but they have since been modified (cleaned up, a few songs replaced, etc.) so
they are much more polished now. They are live recordings, so mathematical perfection
is out of the question. However, only the best recordings make it to these Chant
CDs. Once he was told he didn't have a vocation, Matthew began thinking about
continuing his audio labors as a layman. The initial reaction to these CDs encouraged
him, and the site went on developing. It was at this point that some of the
CDs were revised to remove some of the imperfections.
"How come they are black and white? Are they legit CDs?"
They are legit CDs, although they don't look like CDs you would normally buy
at the store. The Seminary Audio department makes the CDs using off-the-shelf
wholesale supplies: CD-R media (high quality, Taiyo-Yuden), labels, jewel cases,
and card stock. By permission of the Seminary, a similar operation has been
set up at ChantCD.com. We pay royalties to the Seminary for every copy produced,
as the material is copyrighted and still belongs to them.
"Do these CDs play on every kind of CD player?"
Yes, unless your CD player is extremely old (as in, from the early 80's), it
should be able to play CD-R media. Most component systems, car CD players, DVD
players, CD-based video game systems, discman and other similar devices can
play CD-R music CDs. You can find out for sure by burning an audio CD in your
CD-R drive and trying to play it in the device. If one CD-R plays fine, you
can be sure that they all will.
"What if I receive a bad CD? Are these CDs guaranteed?"
Yes, the CDs are guaranteed to work (assuming the CD is the problem, and not
your device). We do not use the cheapest CD media - in fact we are paying
more for the assurance of quality. Nevertheless, there are rare occasions where
the CD media is defective. In such a case, all you have to do is e-mail us,
and we will ship you another disc free of charge.
"Didn't I see these for sale at..."
The answer is probably no. Only one other small online business offers
these CDs for sale. The CDs originate from and are produced by ChantCD.com,
they are not merely sold here.
"Do you have Mass Propers, or any other CDs available?"
We have a large archive of 1 1/2 years of Chant, but a lot of it cannot be used
because there were organ slip-ups, too much noise, etc. It will take time to
go through it all. We plan on putting together many more Chant collections.
So please keep the site bookmarked!
Besides the offerings of the Seminary, there are plans to offer other Chant CDs here as well. We are acquiring many CDs for sale on the market right now, so that we can separate the "chaff from the
wheat" and offer the good ones here. They will be more than 9.99, because our cost will be
much higher. However, it is a good idea to do this so that people can find all the good Gregorian Chant
on one site! We plan to offer samples of those CDs as well.
