English translation of
Sub Tuum Praesidium
We take refuge under thy protection,
holy Mother of God:
Do not despise our prayers
in time of necessity:
but always free us
from all dangers,
O blessed and glorious Virgin.

This sublime hymn, often recited as a prayer, has been sung for centuries in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Who would not sing hymns of praise to her who is most beloved of Our Lord? He loved His mother dearly, and so we who are supposed to imitate Him must love her too! This hymn is sung at Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, or other occasions where a Marian hymn is called for. It can be also be used during the Mass (such as at the Offertory, Communion, etc.).
It is short enough to memorize, which is a good thing. We need to have hymns that we can sing at any time, even when a songbook or hymnal isn't handy. What if we were stuck inside a collapsed tunnel or building? What if we were stuck in the attic of our house, waiting to be rescued from floodwaters? What comfort would we have besides the prayers and hymns that we could sing in our minds, helping us to offer up our sufferings for love of Jesus and Mary.
