St. Dominic wished that the choral office would be sung lightly and joyfully, with simplicity and sobriety. A whole repertoire of Gregorian melodies proper to the Order continues to be sung today: canticles to Our Lady and to Saint Dominic, hymns, and more.

The Dominican liturgy is not an original production. It is a compilation of local usages, made with great care and concern for the sobriety required by the primitive Constitutions. The work of compilation was completed in 1256, during the Generalship of Humbert of Romans, who played an important role in the project.
